Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, Wellington’s renewed Central Library, is a vibrant civic space for reading, learning, creativity, heritage and community connection. Its name means “a window to the wider world,” reflecting its role as an inclusive place where people can exchange ideas, explore stories and connect with Pōneke’s culture. The strengthened and redesigned library reopened to the public on 14 March 2026.

The library is designed to be accessible for everyone, with step-free entrances, lifts to all public floors, accessible toilets, a low-sensory space, hearing-assistance technology and accessible basement parking. Free WellyWiFi is available throughout the building, and a dedicated caregivers’ room provides baby-changing and feeding facilities.

Visitors can also enjoy Central Ground Café, located on the ground floor. The library does not have general dedicated parking, but public parking buildings, on-street spaces and public transport connections are available nearby.
