The Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) helps communities across the Wellington region prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. Its work focuses on building resilient, connected communities that are ready to manage events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, severe weather and other regional hazards.

WREMO works alongside the region’s nine councils, emergency services, lifeline utility providers and other organisations through the Wellington Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Group. Together, these agencies identify and manage risks, coordinate emergency planning, train personnel and volunteers, support emergency responses and assist communities during recovery.

During a major emergency, up to six Emergency Operations Centres may be activated in Wellington, Hutt City, Upper Hutt, Wairarapa, Porirua and Kāpiti. Their activities are coordinated through a regional Emergency Coordination Centre, with support from WREMO and its partner agencies.

WREMO also provides practical preparedness information for households, workplaces and communities, including guidance on emergency supplies, evacuation planning, local hazards, Community Emergency Hubs and ways to stay informed. Emergency Mobile Alerts may be issued when there is a serious threat to life or significant disruption affecting part or all of the region. 

WREMO is an emergency-management and coordination organisation rather than an emergency walk-in facility. During an emergency, residents should follow official alerts, local council updates, WREMO information and trusted radio broadcasts.
