Porirua Fire Station is a key emergency-response facility serving Porirua City and the wider Wellington region. Located on Mungavin Avenue, the station opened in 1962 and has expanded over the years to meet the needs of the growing community. It is identified as Station 31.

The station operates as a composite brigade, bringing together career and volunteer firefighters. According to the brigade’s website, the station has 37 career staff working across four watches, supported by a volunteer unit of 19 members. Its primary response area is Porirua City, although crews and equipment may also be deployed elsewhere in the wider fire district when required.

In addition to attending fires, rescues and other emergencies, Porirua Fire Station maintains specialist breathing apparatus, rescue equipment, hoses and other resources used across the Wellington area. Several fire appliances and a four-wheel-drive vehicle are based at the station to support different types of emergency response.

Volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and play an important role in supporting local emergency services. Applicants generally need to live or work close to the station and complete medical, police-check, training and selection requirements.
